Earlier I was thinking about a presentation my senior tutor Neil gave at the start of this academic year. 

In the presentation there was a slide with a diagram which showed a workflow for R&D. 

The idea is that you should be broadening your research in order to narrow down your research at a later stage. The same goes for development.
